Fine Tune Any Design With Your Own Styles

There is now a custom stylesheet box in your design settings. What you write there is applied to your site after everything else, so it can override any rule in the design.

Who this is for

People who already know what a stylesheet is, and people working with somebody who does. If that is not you, the settings covered in color schemes, font choices, textures and width will get you most of the way with no risk at all.

What we built around it

  • Live preview. You see the effect before saving.
  • Reset. One button clears it and returns the design to stock. Nothing you do here is permanent.
  • Version history. The last ten saves are kept, so a change that broke something can be rolled back.
  • Scope. Your rules are wrapped so they cannot reach the admin. You can only break your own public site, and only visually.

Where the support boundary is

We will not debug your stylesheet, and if a design update changes a class name your rules may stop working. That is the trade for the access, and it is stated plainly here rather than discovered later.

In practice the risk is small. Structural class names in the designs are stable. But it is real, and if your site absolutely must not change unexpectedly, do not use this.

Things worth doing with it

  • Adjusting spacing between sections, which is the most common request and the most harmless.
  • Hiding an element you do not want, which is safer than any other method of removing it.
  • A specific typeface not in our set, loaded from a service you already pay for.
  • Small responsive tweaks at a breakpoint that does not suit your content.

Things that will end badly

Wholesale layout rewrites. Fixed pixel heights on anything containing text. Anything set with maximum importance to defeat a rule you have not understood. And hiding something because you dislike it on desktop without checking what that does on a phone.

Check every change at three widths before you leave it. The preview does this for you.

The scripting equivalent

Custom JavaScript is handled differently and more carefully, for good reason. See custom JavaScript, safely reviewed.
